Chapter 65: A False Alarm
Chapter 65: A False Alarm
On Tuesday morning, Klein took a public carriage to the Harvest Church in the southern part of the bridge.
Although he had consulted a divination beforehand to ensure there was no danger, he still had some doubts.
Since there is no danger, and Cyril is already in Backlund, even living in the South Bridge area, why would he need to ask someone else to come here to find that vampire named Emlyn White?
Or perhaps his true purpose is to become a follower of "The Fool"? But how can he be sure that "The Fool" has followers in Backlund?
As he pondered, he stepped into the Harvest Church.
Compared to the church of the "Goddess of the Night," this place is a bit too deserted; in fact, the word "deserted" doesn't quite fit.
Because there were only three people here, including him: a tall priest sitting at a table praying, and a handsome young man with a grief-stricken expression, idly waving a broom in his hand.
The young man with a grief-stricken expression looked up at him, then lowered his head again, appearing completely uninterested in everything.
The tall priest who had been praying at the table stood up, his imposing figure giving Klein a slight nod.
"Hello there."
"Hello," Klein replied politely, then said, "I'm looking for Emlyn White."
"What do you want from me?"
The handsome young man who was sweeping the floor just moments before suddenly appeared in front of him, moving so fast that even his clown-like intuition couldn't keep up with his movements.
Wow, that's fast! This vampire is quite powerful.
Klein sighed inwardly, considering how to begin, when Emlyn, the vampire before him, spoke first:
"Did my parents send you to find me? They knew I was here, so why didn't they come themselves...?"
He glanced at Father Utravsky not far away and muttered under his breath, "We really need to be careful; this priest is too strange."
He then looked at Klein: "You look so weak, can you really save me?"
"Do you have some special identity? Are you a high-ranking member of a church, or a member of the Loen royal family?"
"That's not right either. You look quite poor, and you're not exactly a charlatan. You couldn't possibly be from the Ruen royal family or a high-ranking member of the church."
...Is it possible that I didn't come here to save you?
Klein felt offended, but Emlyn was already trapped in his own thought process and didn't give him a chance to explain.
Fortunately, Father Utravsky interrupted Emlyn's rambling: "Sir, what brings you to Emlyn White?"
After a moment's thought, considering that Sirion was clearly in Backlund himself, yet had entrusted this matter to someone else, Klein didn't tell the whole story, but instead concealed Sirion's existence:
"I need an extraordinary material. I heard that it exists among vampires, but I have never been able to make contact with them until I heard that there is a vampire here."
Emlyn looked at him and sneered, "Ha, you heard it from that despicable, shameless, cunning, damned Cyril, didn't you? Otherwise, how could you say my name so accurately?"
"It's simple if you want my help: either get me out of here, or bring that damned Cyril here so I can beat him up—no, beat him up every single day!"
This hatred seems quite intense... Klein's lips twitched slightly. He roughly understood why Cyril had sent someone else to contact this vampire.
He paused, then turned to the tall priest beside him and asked:
"Father, how should I address you?"
Father Utravsky calmly replied, "You can call me Father Utravsky."
Klein nodded slightly, then continued, "Father Utravsky, may I ask why Mr. Emlyn was imprisoned... um... kept here?"
Father Utravsky said without reservation, "He was in a state of blood thirst before, and chased a victim into the church. I subdued him, and he is currently here doing volunteer work, experiencing the teachings of the Mother Goddess."
Upon hearing this, Emlyn immediately shouted, "Give up! My faith belongs only to the moon, only to the great ancestor!"
Klein glanced helplessly at this straightforward vampire... "Can't you at least pretend a little? When you're under someone's roof, you have to bow your head."
Seemingly sensing his thoughts, Emlyn gave a soft snort: "My faith in the moon is pure and cannot be defiled!"
"Moreover, this guy has a magical item with the 'spectator' pathway, so ordinary disguises can't fool him at all."
After a brief pause, he added, "If you can't rescue me, I won't be able to contact other vampires, let alone obtain the extraordinary materials you need."
This is definitely not a simple request... Klein sighed inwardly, turning to look at Father Utravsky, who smiled and said:
"Apart from requiring him to do volunteer work here, I have not restricted his freedom."
Upon hearing this, Emlyn's expression suddenly became quite interesting. He pointed at Father Utravsky and, after a long pause, finally uttered a sentence:
"You mean I can leave this church and go home once I finish my work?"
"Of course," Father Utravsky nodded.
"Then why didn't you tell me?" Emlyn shouted, his face showing signs of collapse.
Father Utravsky said in a flat tone, "You didn't ask any questions, and you weren't very efficient in your work before."
Emlyn's face flushed red and then turned pale, giving Klein a close-up view of his changing expressions.
So, this task isn't difficult at all? All you need to do is convince this vampire to help you?
...What a blunder!
Knowing that he could leave the church once he finished his work, Emlyn took a broom in one hand and a burlap sack in the other and began cleaning the church with unprecedented enthusiasm.
Father Utravsky nodded with satisfaction as he watched Emlin's actions, believing that Emlin was gradually grasping the doctrine of the joy of a bountiful harvest.
Klein stepped forward to help, trying to get closer to Emlyn.
His method worked very well. After cleaning the church and confirming with Father Utravsky that he could leave, Emlyn immediately asked Klein:
"What extraordinary materials do you need? I will help you communicate with the vampire who possesses them."
"However, you'll have to pay for it yourself. Also, I have one more condition: you have to help me lure that damn bastard out so I can give him a good beating!"
"Also, how should I contact you?"
Klein glanced back at the Harvest Church behind him, but before he could speak, Emlyn firmly refused:
"No, I will never go back here again, never!"
I think it's not up to you. Father Utravsky's attitude just now said it all... Klein swallowed back what he was about to say and gave his address and the business card he had prepared yesterday.
...This can also be considered as promoting myself.
"Sherlock Moriarty...you're a detective, so you must be able to find that damn guy, right?"
Emlyn's eyes lit up when he saw Klein's profession.
Klein nodded almost imperceptibly: "I'll try. I got the information at a gathering of extraordinary individuals. You know, everyone hides their identities at these kinds of gatherings, making it difficult to pinpoint a target."
Emlyn patted him on the shoulder: "It's okay, I believe in your abilities."
Klein's lips twitched slightly, unsure how to respond... Should I say thank you for your trust, or should I say that I'm actually in cahoots with that damn guy you're talking about?
The two barely exchanged a few words before Emlyn rushed home. Seeing this, Klein also boarded a public carriage and returned to his rented house in the Joewood district. His detective agency had just opened, and he didn't want to miss his first client just because of one outing, especially since he wouldn't make money from this Tarot Club commission.
Perhaps I can make some money from this.
Since all the expenses are paid by Mr. "Fate" anyway, it shouldn't be a problem for me to claim more travel and labor costs, right?
After all, my detective agency didn't open for business this morning because of his case. Even if we don't have any clients today, what if we do? I'll just lose some income.
